1 What kind of R&D exposure will I get as an intern at DSO?
DSO undertakes applied R&D for the nation’s defence and security applications. We have built up distinctive capabilities in key areas such as guided systems, command, control and communications (C3); sensor systems and signal processing; electronic warfare, advanced electronics and advanced materials; and biomedical, human sciences, chemical-biological defence and environmental protection. As an intern, you will have an opportunity to work alongside our researchers in these areas and contribute to our multi-disciplinary R&D teams.
   
2 What does the Internship Programme at DSO entails?
  You will be assigned projects with real challenges, solutions and deadlines. You will be part of our R&D team and you will work alongside our engineers and scientists, and you will be given opportunities to contribute research and ideas that could eventually manifest itself in a complete product the Singapore Armed Forces will use. You will acquire practical work experience in operating state-of-the-art equipment and instruments.

January The Orientation … a welcome programme for you to discover the many facets of DSO … a time where you will familiarise yourselves with DSO’s physical surroundings … and meet other interns …
February & April Enrichment Courses … the enrichment courses are designed to equip you with knowledge and skills that are universally applicable… this programme aims to add value to the technical exposure you’ll get at DSO… and gears you towards the IA project competition …
March The Feedback Session … a sharing session with your DSO and university supervisors … a chance for DSO staff to meet your university supervisors to explore possible collaborative efforts…
May The IA Project Competition … the first round of shortlisting will be done by DSO’s IA supervisors … the second round of shortlisting will be conducted by DSO’s senior technical staff … top 5 projects will qualify for the final round where interns will make a presentation to a panel of judges comprising management staff of DSO and the universities … winners will receive cash prizes plus lots of publicity…
June The Closing Ceremony the end of a fruitful internship... and we hope that you short stint at DSO has inspired you sufficiently to pursue a career in R&D.
   
3 What is the duration of the internship?
  Six months for local undergraduates in 2 intakes – January to June and July to December. Summer Internship for overseas students ranges from 8 to 12 weeks, which can commence in May or July.
   
4 Internship at DSO sounds exciting but a little daunting. Why kind of guidance or support will I receive?
  Every intern is paired with a supervisor who is responsible for mentoring, guiding and challenging you in the undertaking. Along the way, improvements will be made to the execution of the internship programme based on feedback from the intern and the supervisor. At the end of the programme, both the intern and the supervisor will provide an evaluation of internship.
