3-D Sensing

Discipline: Computer Engineering / Computer Science

Project Description:
A mobile robot operating in an urban environment such as an office needs to be able to perceive its surroundings well. With the use of laser range finders and possibly cameras for vision, a 3-D view of the environment can be constructed to help the robot navigate its surroundings.

This project requires the intern to do a literature survey on the current approaches to 3-D sensing by the research community. The intern will then develop and implement one or more of the approaches with the use of a mobile robot and laser range finders. Vision using cameras can potentially be combined with the 3-D view to provide a clearer view of the environment.

Pre-requisite:
Intermediate programming skills in C/C++ and an inclination to do research in robotics.
