CSI – The Cyber Edition

Discipline: Computer Engineering / Computer Science/Electrical Engineering preferred

Project Description:
Background. Mobile phones, PDA, UMPC, GPS have one thing in common, they commonly use flash memory chip for storage of information. Currently, there are well defined procedures and tools for forensics acquisition of hard disk based system but not for flash based system.  Some commercial tools do exist, but they are inadequate in their own ways.  Given the increased use of flash memory chip in personal devices, it is important to develop a forensic-capable and flexible acquisition tool for these devices.

Objectives. The objective is to develop a universal NAND flash reader/programmer cum analyzer using Xilinx development board.

Along the way you will also investigate the issues involving forensic and how to preserve evidence integrity during the extraction process that would be of adequate forensic quality.

The intern, upon successful project completion, will gain significant hands-on experience in a core building block in modern embedded devices used by billions of users worldwide and embark on an in-depth adventure in forensic studies.

Deserving candidates who successfully demonstrate the concepts/prototype would be funded to attend a relevant overseas/local conference.

Pre-requisite:
Non-technical
- Self-driven to learn things that are not taught
- Strong independent thinking and initiative

Technical
- Knowledge and experience in VHDL programming
- Experience in embedded system development is preferred
