Internship Programmes 2008

Shallow Water Equations and Tsunami Waves

Discipline : Engineering, Physics, Mathematics

Project Description :

The project aims to: implement the Shallow Water Equations in 1D, and validate with both experimental results and some exact solutions from hyperbolic problems.  After this, explore the open source code package TsunamiClaw, found in Clawpack. The student is then left to explore how to use the Tsunami package to model the movement over some body of water and how to do comparison and validation.

The challenge of the project to introduce the students to research in the area of modeling problems using finite volume methods. In particular, the students can learn in more depth about methods and research in tsunami modeling.

Pre-requisite :

Interest in algorithm development, basic programming skill in MATLAB or any languages
