Project Description : Insects have compound eyes, meaning their eyes are made up of many lenses. As you know, each lens will form an image in the insect’s mind but how does the insect fuse the images from the many lenses together to form a coherent picture that the insect can make sense out of? The protocerebrum – the insect brain is known to perform this image superposition.
The objective of this project is to model the insect compound visual system and emulate its functions and processes. This project requires the intern / student to do surveys on the visual sensors of different insects by comparing and contrasting the species’ vision. The intern will then attempt to model and emulate the common features by building and developing an electronic compound eye system.
In the final phase, the intern will design and model the “computational” processes of the protocerebrum in MATLAB or other programming languages and integrate with the electronic compound eye system and analyse the results.
