Project Description : Insects have a keen sense of smell and can differentiate between many odours even from afar (relative to the size of the insect) distance. A study of the insect brain reveals that the mushroom bodies in the insect brain are the “computers” that processes the odour signals. It will be interesting to understand and emulate some of these processes.
The objective of this project is to model the insect olfactory sensor system and emulate its functions and processes. This project requires the intern / student to do surveys on the olfactory (smell) sensors of different insects by comparing and contrasting the “nervous systems”.
The intern will then attempt to model and emulate the common features on an electronic nose system. In the final phase, the intern will design and model the “computational” processes of the mushroom bodies in MATLAB or other programming languages and integrate with the electronic nose and analyse the results.
