Project Description : Simulation is an important tool that is used in the everyday training and decision making process in military domain. Increasingly, unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned submersible vehicles are replacing humans in search and rescue missions that involve the exploration of unknown and sometimes hazardous environment. As these machines often have to operate autonomously in these areas, it is vital that it is equipped with rules and knowledge support tools (e.g. inference engine and ontology knowledge-base) to make decisions either individually or collectively on how to handle different situations.
Simulation provides an effective platform to test out rules and strategies used for decision support in these unmanned vehicles. In this project, a simulation model will be developed using commerical simulation packages (e.g. FlexSim, Automod). This model will serve as a testbed for evaluating rules and strategies for unmanned vehicles. A set of scenarios will be defined to assess the effectiveness of the rules and strategies used in these unmanned vehicles. This project is divided into part. The first part of the project focuses on building a realistic simulation model testbed. The second part of the project focuses on developing rules and strategies for a pre-defined set of scenarios.
